Ever since I entered this field, my passion has been working with children 0-6 years old and their families!  Challenges and obstacles happen in all families, yet sometimes people give parents the advice to not worry about their youngest members of their families.  Parents hear things like “Don’t worry he/she/they will grow out of it.”  or “They won’t remember any of this because they are so young” or “It’s just a stage, they will be ok.”   The truth is parents often worry about their children and know when there is something that needs to be addressed. Parents are typically the experts on their children and that is a valuable resource in therapy with young children!  Most people often think young children do not need therapy, but the research does not support this idea.   Early childhood mental health treatment is designed to reduce the distress and suffering of young children.   Treatment helps young children return to healthy development and behavior. Infant-early childhood mental health covers children birth to five or six years of age.  It focuses on children’s social and emotional jobs of forming close and secure adult and peer relationships, learning to experience, manage, and express a full range of emotions as well as explore and learn in their environment.  Many different things in the lives’ of children and families can benefit from therapy.  Events such as birth complications, post-partum, medical problems, hospitalizations, broken bones, dog bites, divorce/separation/death of a parent or caregiver, natural disasters, moving, and new siblings all can be addressed in therapy with young children.  You catch my drift right? Anything occurring to a child or to their most important people their family can be addressed in therapy.

I have been a Clinical Supervisor for Children’s Home Society of Washington (CHSW) in Vancouver, WA. I continue to train and consult for CHSW Vancouver’s Child Parent Psychotherapy team.   I provide Reflective Supervision/Consultation to various professional community members working with children 0-5 years old and am a trainer for the ASQ-3 and ASQ-SE2. I have presented at statewide Conferences and locally in the Vancouver area on Mitigating the Effects of Toxic Stress and Trauma in Children 0-6 years old. I have over 20 years of experience working with children and families in the areas of acute hospitalization, residential treatment, and community outpatient mental health. I have been trained in forensic interviewing and helped begin a Child Advocacy Center in Helena, MT along with beginning a partnership with A.W.A.R.E Inc. and Head Start in Billings, MT provide mental health treatment to children and families attending Head Start.

In my free time, I enjoy spending time with family and friends and traveling  I enjoy hiking in the mountains, playing with my Llewellin Setter, Nala, and running huge relay races like Hood to Coast, Wild Rogue Relay, and Cascade Lakes relay.  I enjoy most things that are active and outdoors and am always looking for my next adventure!
