Katie,
Hello there, I’m Katie! (They/them)
My name is Katie, but I also go by Kat. I identify as German, Norweign, and Polish, and raised in the United States. I identify as non-binary, but dress more fem-inclined. I have studied LGBTQ+, Decolonization of Western Medicine, Racial Studies, and Social Justice. I am a recent graduate from Portland State University School of Social Work.
My approaches are strength based and influenced greatly by what a person likes to engage in, such as hobbies or general interests. I firmly believe that utilizing things that are familar and safe to a client, help greatly in making a safe space in therapy. The first step towards this is to build rapport with the client. Then, I take a warm, compassionate, understanding, direct, flexible and empowering approach to help clients achieve a new, but familiar mindset of themselves. I typically try to achieve this by engaging in traditional roles of talk therapy, but also through exploration of new methodologies and seeing what the client brings to the table. Some of my favorite methodologies include Geek Therapy and Narrative Therapy.
It may be scary at first to address this change, but we can process that together. I am simply grateful that you have started the journey and look forward to what awaits.
Outside of work, I engage in plenty of creative outlets! Whether it be drag shows, drawing or engaging in a new ADHD fixation, I enjoy the ability to create and the freedom that offers. It helps me unwind and ground myself when the world feels overwhelming. I also enjoy playing video games, specifically nintendo, or being with my dogs. Sometimes they even join me in session (as well as being creative and video games).
Education: I am a recent graduate from Portland State University School of Social Work.
I am best for people who: are ages 10 and older, and typically work best with someone who understands that there is a need for change in their behavior.
