Mirit Markowitz, MS, MHP, LMHC

I was born in the Levant in a city called Haifa and raised in Berkeley, California. I am an immigrant, genderqueer (pronouns: they/them/theirs) trans-identified therapist with an intersectional combination of both privileged and marginalized identities. Growing up in a home with a different culture from my school life allowed me to understand bi-cultural stress and have the objective mindset to understand the different worlds that can exist all within one context. In addition, being the only trans-identified therapist in my graduate program, allowed me to understand the ways therapy can help those with marginalized identities find resilience and strength while navigating complicated systems, and the ways we as a profession still need to improve in order to provide truly culturally competent care.

I love that therapy can help in personal and spiritual liberation for those of us who are often led to believe that it is our identities and the things that make us different that cause our problems. I love to watch people learn and grow in boundaries, self-care and resilience in the therapeutic process. To watch people drop what feels inauthentic and oppressive and inhabit their true selves fully as a practice is an honor and drives my passion to continue to learn and grow for my clients. Ultimately, my favorite day in practice is the one when my clients tell me they don't need my help anymore.

I have over 5 years of experience in providing psychotherapy and clinical supervision in a community mental health setting, primary care settings, and private practice. I specialize in open and affirming care for folks who want to focus on depression, anxiety, trauma-based mental health concerns, bi-cultural stress, coping with oppressive systems in the world, grief and loss, health at every size, coping with chronic illness and pain, and stress/life transition.

When not practicing therapy you can find me at a Shabbat dinner eating or cooking food, going on long city walks, and playing my ukulele.

Specialty: LGBTQIA+ community ages 15-65, especially those who are also first generation or immigrant identified,  and nonbinary, transgender, relationship expansive, kink and BDSM communities

I am best for people who: are seeking to find serenity and integration of all their emotions and identities.
